Talent without working hard is nothing
- Cristiano Ronaldo, Portuguese Footballer
From thrilling victories to heartbreaking defeats, every match has been competitive. Let's take a closer look at the triumphs, challenges and defining moments that have shaped the year for DGS FC under the guidance and expertise of Mr. Kellett and Mr. Lynch.
Boys 1st Year: This was our first time having a 1st year boys team in the school, and we are absolutely delighted with how they performed. They battled hard through the group stage of the league coming up against some very stiff opposition and managed to make it through to the semi finals. The team played fantastic football and improved game by game. There are so many positives to take from the year and we have no doubt that they will continue to grow and will be in with a very good chance of getting one step further in 2024/2025.
Boys U15s, TY Cup, U17s and U19s: Like the 1st years the U15s had a tough campaign in the group stages of the league. As they move up to the U17s, this team looks hungry for success and will have their eye on silverware. There is a huge amount of talent in this squad.
The TY cup started brightly for DGS with a very good win away to Clonturk in Dublin. They ground out a gritty 1-0 win. Unfortunately, there is no league for the TY's, so it is an open draw and we got drawn against the Leinster U17 finalists. Our team was depleted on the day and Portmarnock proved to be too strong for us, but our U17s players who were involved learned some valuable lessons and this loss perhaps became the catalyst for the greatest win in DGS football history to date. You have to learn how to lose, which is much harder, yet more invaluable than winning. Losing is a test of character.
The U17 team managed to do what no football team has ever done in the school, bring home the cup! From the outset this year, this team clicked and took no time at all settling down and playing good quality football. From the start of the year they played as a unit and it was that togetherness which got them over the line. The victory tasted really sweet and we are sure the lads will want that feeling again. Really well done, we are so proud of you. Heroes make history.
The U19 season did not go as well as we had hoped. Our team had so much quality and we are still kicking ourselves for the semi final loss. We would like to thank the sixth year players on the team for giving us so many unbelievable memories and taking DGS football to another level. You have truly contributed to the success of DGS FC and paved the way for the next generation of talent. You are the standard bearers and will never be forgotten.
Girls Under 15s and U17s: 2023/2024 was the inaugural year for Girls Soccer in DGS when it came to entering teams into Leinster leagues. There had been a social interest from some students but it had been more difficult to get the team off the ground until this year. We are very proud of our girls, and it is fantastic to see the growth of girls football in the school and long may it continue. We have excellent facilities here, for both summer and winter training on the astro and the more exposure we get to playing competitive games, the quicker this team will grow and improve. We are looking forward to next year and getting back on the pitch again, hopefully start building some momentum and get a few wins to our name. Onwards and upwards!
Looking ahead to the next season, there's an air of anticipation and promise. We will regroup, strategies will be refined, and new talents will emerge. For fans and players alike, the end of one season is merely the countdown to the excitement of the next. Together, we turn our eyes to the future, ready to support our teams as they strive for glory in the upcoming challenges. Here's to another year of passion, perseverance, and the love of the game! Respect to DGS Park, our muddy field of dreams. Hon the DGS!
